Eugene Francis Jnr (and The Juniors) to support Coldplay’s UK Tour

Welshman Eugene Francis Jnr will be releasing ‘Hobo Occupation’ through Legion Records on November 24th, and as if that’s not enough to warm the cockles of your heart, he’s also going on a UK/EU/US tour with Coldplay and Todd Rundgren respectively. Currently Coldplay’s Manchester, Dublin and Belfast support slots and the remaining two dates in London are as yet unknown. More on Eugene Francis Jnr at his MySpace page here

Here’s his Coldplay support schedule:

29/11/08 : UK : Arena, Sheffield : with Coldplay
01/12/08 : UK : NIA, Birmingham : with Coldplay
02/12/08 : UK : NIA, Birmingham : with Coldplay
03/12/08 : UK : NIA, Birmingham : with Coldplay
06/12/08 : UK : SECC Hall, Glasgow : with Coldplay
07/12/08 : UK : Echo Arena, Liverpool : with Coldplay

The Cardiff singer/songwriter became good friends with Coldplay when they studied together at University College London. Francis, who roomed with Coldplay’s drummer Will Champion in halls of residence, even holds the distinction of having had Coldplay support his former band, The Fantastic Super Foofs, back in 1996.

Coldplay, Antwerp Sportpaleis
Bigger than ever

Coldplay Tower High expectations, it’s something that only the very large so capable. After the frightening perfect concert in Antwerp, there is only one conclusion: Coldplay is big, very big. Sounded for the program with Albert Hammond Junior - think of snatches of The Kooks or even Arctic Monkeys - still pretty good, then blew away Coldplay anyone with ease.

Sept 29 - My Adventure to Bologna

When I was back in the states and saw that Coldplay was touring Europe while I’d be abroad…. I was stoked! Maybe I’d travel to another country to see Coldplay …And then I saw the dates in Italy… in Bologna–only an hour’s train ride from Florence! I bought 2 tickets, hoping I’d make a friend who liked Coldplay enough to pay $86 and a buy train ticket to come with me.

Fortunately, I found a girl in my ceramics class. Her name is Mo (aka Maurine), she’s from New Jersey, and she’s a total goofball. We didn’t really know each other going into it, but we got along great and had a fantastic time!

As I hoped they would be, Coldplay was ..incredible. I nearly cried I was so overwhelmed with joy haha. Well worth the adventure! The venue was fairly small–definitely not as big as Key Arena. The Italians by me all seemed to be quite ecstatic and enjoying the music as much as I was. Pretty much everyone knew all the words, even the girl next to us who spoke absolutely no english. It really is amazing how music can be so universal and affect someone the same way it affects me.. even though they don’t understand the words, they can feel the emotion and the excitement through the music.. They can feel overtaken by the sad yet content and comforting feeling of “Fix You” …or a rush from the marching beat and triumphant strings of “Viva la Vida”…. Perhaps they might be moved by the atmosphere of live music, ..the rhythm physically pounding in their chest…

Sunny Zurich.

Half an hour until the Oxfam volunteers arrive for campaigning at tonight’s Coldplay show. I’m sitting outside catching (possibly) some of the last rays of summer, in sunny Zurich. It’s important to catch your vitamin D from the sunshine you know.. especially when you work in the dim light of these indoor arenas all day. I have to admit (as I squint at the glare of the screen), the weather is making me wish we had an outdoor stadium show today!

Awesome show!! I’m still finding paper butterflies in my clothes and pockets The band and crowd were all in a great mood, and Chris was very talkative, saying that the show was being recorded for the launch of a new UK radio station (the name of which has temporarily slipped my mind), and also making a few Oktoberfest references. [thanks MagooUK] I honestly have never ever been to such an awesome concert! It had everything you’d want. It was really an unforgettable experience and I definitely want to see them again this tour. I’m still speechless. They rocked the house real good. We were in the 2nd row right in the middle. Even though Lovers in Japan is not my favorite Coldplay song, I still think it was the highlight of the concert. Albert Hammond Jr was not really in good shape tonight and played just about 20 minutes.

Coldplay Roadie #42 - Blog #22

#42 muses on the band’s time in Japan

Can it really be a week since we left Japan? Worse yet, I’ve not yet submitted my journals from those shows. “Jetlag” sounds far more glamourous and interesting than “couldn’t get off the sofa”, so I’m sticking with that. Somehow though, I think we all know where the truth lies.

In a nice follow-on from the previous journal, I opened my hotel room curtains in Osaka to be greeted by a building in the distance bearing the word “Yodobashi”. The very same camera shop I arrived at in Tokyo minus my credit card. Over breakfast, I enlist the permanently Leica-bearing Berryman to join me for a trip over there. I’ve managed to obtain cash and today there’s no stopping me. We both return somewhat lighter of wallet, but laden with photographic goodies. [Read more]

Coldplay To Tour South America In March 2009?

‘Revista Veja’, a Brazilian Magazine, interviewed Chris Martin after Coldplay’s soundcheck in San Jose last week - and promptly gave Latin America fans the news they’d been waiting for since early 2007 - a trip to South America around March 2009.

Which leaves us all wondering if Coldplay have double-booked Australia and South America by mistake or whether it’s part of the same tour leg. Chris Martin spoke to Nova 96.9FM (Sydney radio station) the day before the San Jose show in which Chris said that Coldplay will hopefully tour Australia in February or March next year.

Australia or South America, or both? We’ll wait and see.

Full Chris Martin interview is below [thanks Cris-Santos/Suzana Fong].
