#42 muses on the band’s time in Japan

Can it really be a week since we left Japan? Worse yet, I’ve not yet submitted my journals from those shows. “Jetlag” sounds far more glamourous and interesting than “couldn’t get off the sofa”, so I’m sticking with that. Somehow though, I think we all know where the truth lies.

In a nice follow-on from the previous journal, I opened my hotel room curtains in Osaka to be greeted by a building in the distance bearing the word “Yodobashi”. The very same camera shop I arrived at in Tokyo minus my credit card. Over breakfast, I enlist the permanently Leica-bearing Berryman to join me for a trip over there. I’ve managed to obtain cash and today there’s no stopping me. We both return somewhat lighter of wallet, but laden with photographic goodies. [Read more]

Coldplay To Tour South America In March 2009?

‘Revista Veja’, a Brazilian Magazine, interviewed Chris Martin after Coldplay’s soundcheck in San Jose last week - and promptly gave Latin America fans the news they’d been waiting for since early 2007 - a trip to South America around March 2009.

Which leaves us all wondering if Coldplay have double-booked Australia and South America by mistake or whether it’s part of the same tour leg. Chris Martin spoke to Nova 96.9FM (Sydney radio station) the day before the San Jose show in which Chris said that Coldplay will hopefully tour Australia in February or March next year.

Australia or South America, or both? We’ll wait and see.

Full Chris Martin interview is below [thanks Cris-Santos/Suzana Fong].

Coldplay delivers hot New York show [Online Reviews/Setlist]

NEW YORK - Yes, there were mistakes and technical glitches.

But about 10,000 lucky contest winners from all over the world who attended Coldplay’s only free concert in North America at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, which followed similar events in London and Barcelona last week, didn’t seem to mind the-less-than perfect show one little bit.

In fact, as the hour-and-10-minute concert emptied out, fans could be heard singing the rousing chorus of the title track from Coldplay’s week-old new album, Viva La Vida, which has become the group’s first ever No. 1 single in both England and the U.S.

This overall acceptance of the British pop-rock act’s percussive-heavy new music, tweaked by producers Brian Eno and Markus Dravs, is a good sign for Coldplay who appear on the verge of becoming the next U2 in terms of worldwide popularity and big arena shows despite critical drubbing in some quarters that their oh-so-sensitive songs appeal to females more than males.

That wasn’t the case on Monday night in terms of an audience that was equally male-female and included such famous faces as Chris Rock, Charlize Theron, Stuart Townsend and Molly Sims (Vegas). [Read more]

Roadie #42 - Blog #6

“Sleep satisfies” a friend of mine once said. He’s not kidding! I arrived in NYC a couple of days ago and spent the entire day yesterday in bed. Refreshed and recharged, I roll into Madison Square Garden at 10am to find that things are looking in great shape. No surprise really, as there’s been some very hard-working folks in here since midnight! Many of them are the new American sound, light and video crews who have never even seen this show, let alone put it together. Combine this with the pressure that a NYC show brings and you have to hand it to these guys - they’ve already done a great job. [Read more]
