Northern Star Magazine: Chris Martin not deserving of rock ‘god’ status

The Northern Star, the all student-produced, independent media from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, has produced an article claiming that Coldplay’s Chris Martin is not deserving of rock ‘god’ status.

Sure, Coldplay might dominate Billboard charts and receive wide-critical praise, but is front-man Chris Martin the rock and roll god he’s made out to be?

If he is, I will gladly go to the rock and roll gallows as a heretic. Meanwhile, Andrew McMahon of Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin could take Chris Martin any day—in a piano duel, or something. Jack’s Mannequin’s new album, “The Glass Passenger,” managed to sell a respectable 49,000 copies in its first week of release and also received critical acclaim. He’s no push-over, but his albums have not gone gold within a day of release like Coldplay’s albums have. Just keep in mind that Hootie and The Blowfish’s album “Cracked Rear View” went on to sell 16 million copies and to prove that majority musical taste has no correlation to talent.

The Wit And Wisdom Of Coldplay… [Q Awards Acceptance Speech]

Double award winners Coldplay wowed the crowds with some of the best on-stage gags and speeches of the awards. As drummer Will Champion collected the award for best act in the world, he responded to Adam Ant’s crack that the band had stolen their sartorial ideas from him. “Thanks to Q for inviting Adam Ant and making us all look like fucking wankers,” Champion said.

Chris Martin made it clear that he still carried a torch for Cerys Matthews, despite being married to one of the world’s most famous actresses. After collecting the best act title, Martin said: “About eight years ago we supported Catatonia and you let me hold your cigarette. I thought ‘maybe there is a chance’.” Unlucky in love Cerys shot back: “There is a chance!” [Read more]

Dear Coldplay fans and friends…[New EP in November and Lost+ ft Jay-Z]

A letter from Chris…

Dear Coldplay fans and friends…

First of all, thank you for the incredible year you have been giving us so far; asking for our songs on the radio, to buying an album, to coming to a show; we owe you in a big way. As audiences, you have been incredibly awesome to play for, and might I add that your singing has been in excellent form.

In the spirit of trying to do things a bit differently and keep everything fresh, we are going to do a few musical moves that we have not previously attempted. Firstly, in a few weeks, we are going to release a version of Lost! which has a guest experiences on it in the form of Jay-Z.

Then in November, we are happ to announce that we are putting out an E.P. called PROSPEKT’S MARCH. It contains five songs that were not finished back in May [our deadline for Viva La Vida] but that have just been completed. They are:

1) Life in Technicolor II [which is a song]
2) Postcards from Far Away
3) Glass of Water
4) Rainy Day
and
5) Prospekt’s March [with another painting by Eugene Delacroix]

We are very proud of these and are pretty excited to release them. They have each been the subject of many discussions and arguments; some might be considered too catch or too heavy for Coldplay songs, but in our minds they complete the VIVA LA VIDA picture. [Read more]

Coldplay’s Guy Berryman: “My home is full of strange things” [Nettiescoop]

The British band played yesterday in Zurich. “Ch” said before the concert with Guy Berryman.

Chris Martin is a cold, guitarist Jon Buckland feels is not healthy. How are you?
Guy Berryman: I’m cold. We sit every day in an airplane, the air conditioning is always running, your body becomes weaker and weaker. If then a cold, he puts all the others.

You must today after the concert once again to travel further?
No, we stay in Zurich. I hope that tomorrow I will have time, a bit through the city to walk.

Do Believe The Hype #1 - Coldplay [Article]

Whilst us here at AS strive to push the names of new bands and get unrecognized talent brought to the fore, once in a while, it’s nice to sit back and observe some of the bands who have truly ‘made it’; bands who have proven their musical longevity and retained, or increased their popularity. Of course, just because something is popular, it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily good; but on the other hand, some bands are truly deserving of their success, whether it be their ability to evolve, or simply their ability to deliver what their fans want.

In this series of features, we aim to look at the current crop of world-famous, stadium filling bands, and observe some of the moments where the band have truly shone. We begin with a band who started out as wide-eyed, scruffy UCL students, and seven years later, became one of the biggest bands in the world - Coldplay.

5. - Lost!
