More Coldplay Trivia from the Oracle

Whoo, so many questions answered…….

August 15, 2008 - submitted by Kit, United Kingdom

Q. Is Jonny Buckland Welsh? He doesn’t look Welsh. But then I’m not sure who does.

The Oracle replies:

From The Moldy Peaches to Mold. Jonny was born in Mold, North Wales but he and his family moved away when he was very small.

Q. What do you do when a girl agrees to go out on a date with you but then says to her friends that she just wants to be friends with you even though she agreed on a date ? does this make me sound silly?

The Oracle replies:

It doesn’t make you silly, but you need to chill. Firstly it may depend how and what you asked her. If she said, “will you go out with me?” there’s no confusion. If you asked if she’d like to go to the cinema or a meal etc. maybe that’s left it a little open and she thinks you’re going as friends. Besides, you may go out on this date and decide you don’t want to see each other again, so it’s not necessarily a bad thing that’s she not committed to calling it a date.

Q. I noticed that in in a couple of Zach Braff’s movies there are Coldplay songs; likewise with Owen Wilson. Can you name the two movies I am thinking of for both Zach and Owen? And, does that mean these actors like Coldplay? Do they have any say in what songs are used throughout their movies?

The Oracle replies:

It just so happens that yes, I do know the films you speak of. The band do have a say in what songs are used (or not) within films. The management and label have opinions that are considered too. Actors don’t always get a say in artists used in the soundtrack but sometimes are relied on. For example, Juno’s star Ellen Page was asked what bands she thought Juno might listen to. Ellen put forward the Moldy Peaches, which is why they feature. Oh, by the way, it’s The Last Kiss, Garden State, Wedding Crashers and You, Me & Dupree.

Q. In the movie “Knocked Up” the band is referred to as a band that if a guy listens to it then he’s gay- how does the band feel about that?

The Oracle replies:

Luckily the band have a good sense of humour. It was for comedy effect and isn’t true so it’s funny. By the way, it was The 40 Year Old Virgin, not Knocked Up. FYI Both were written and directed by Judd Apatow. Steve Carell co-wrote The 40 Year Old Virgin as well as starred in it.

Q. I thought Coldplay did a fantastic job in Toronto, but I had never heard of Santogold - how did they get to be the opening band?

The Oracle replies:

Coldplay are huge fans of Santogold so invited them to support.

Q. You know the writing that looks like handwriting that’s all over the website. Did someone actually write it or is it a font?

The Oracle replies:

That is actually genuine bona fide handwriting.

Q. Oh dearest Oracle…How do you find the time to answer so many trying questions?

The Oracle replies:

I set aside time to answer but that’s not been the problem… it’s trying to find good enough questions to answer. I look for a mix of personal, factual, amusing and Coldplay related but it takes hours to actually find decent Q’s so thank you Abbey for giving me the opportunity to plead for better questions!

Q. Has Coldplay begun working on any material for their next album (supposedly due for release at the end of next year), and if so, what direction is the music taking? Will it stay an experimental, rock sound? I really hope Coldplay sticks with rock… It would disappoint me to see them go anywhere beyond country/folk.

The Oracle replies:

Coldplay don’t stop writing so it’s not a case of if they’re working on material for the next album, it’s more a case of whether any will still be around by then. Also, rumours are always rife about when an album’s coming but it won’t be next year, though we can’t say when. Equally it will be what it will be, there’s no plan of its musical direction.

Q. On the day of Viva La Vida’s release Chris and Will were on Jo Whiley’s radio show and Chris said that he has two tatoos, I was wondering where and what of as I’ve never spotted them in any pictures of him.

The Oracle replies:

They’re on his inner wrists. An A and an M.

Q. Hello, We are planning to develop a fan club website for Coldplay whose music rapidly spreads among crowds of people across our country(Turkey). However, We do want to develop this website officially within the Coldplay family. We would be glad if you give us some information.

The Oracle replies:

You can’t develop the site as part of the official Coldplay site I’m afraid but there are loads of unofficial fan sites around the world. One international one that springs to mind is http://www.coldplayzone.it. If you contact Patrizio he’s really nice so am sure he’d be helpful.

Q. Being the first time Coldplay will be touring Eastern Europe, can we expect some special setlist with older hits or some kind of surprise?

The Oracle replies:

I want it to be a surprise rather than tell you. To some extent it will be very similar to what they have been playing so far. The set list is always subject to change and they do prepare a number of songs to drop in from time to time. That said, they also decide to do impromptu versions along the way too. There’ll be many from the new album of course too as well as old favourites.

Q. Do they mind about Liam Gallagher saying that the Coldplay’s fans are boring and “unhappy” ?

The Oracle replies:

You know how the media love to print these spats but we don’t concern ourselves with such things. Besides, everyone involved with Coldplay including the band know otherwise. You as fans know the truth and so do we!

Q. I have tried to send amazing pictures I took at the Philadelphia Coldplay concert to Ms. Wild but her email seems to no longer exist. Everyone of my emails has been returned. Is there another way I can get in touch with the band?

The Oracle replies:

I understand there have been some technical issues with her email address that I gave out but hopefully the problem will be sorted soon. It is the correct address though. EDIT: All is well again.

August 13, 2008 - submitted by Miho, Japan

Q. I couldn’t find play in Japan.
When will Coldplay come and play?

The Oracle replies:

Oh dear, it looks like you just missed them. They were at the Summer Sonic Festival (Tokyo & Osaka) last week!

August 13, 2008 - submitted by Jessica, Canada

Q. Do the guys bring a private chef with them when they are on tour?

The Oracle replies:

The band have a catering company on the road with them (as do most touring bands). They’re called Eat to the Beat and are absolutely amazing. They create different menus every day and provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and snacks for the entire crew as well as lay on any dressing room fodder and cater for after shows if needs be. Heidi is the wonderful lady who leads the team.

August 13, 2008 - submitted by Tommi, Finland

Q. I was wondering, how did Chris end-up in Kanye West’s song Homecoming? Did Kanye call Chris or what just happened?

The Oracle replies:

Kanye just happened to be recording at Abbey Road Studios, London when Coldplay were performing a BBC radio live show in February 2006. They met, got talking, had a jam and Homecoming was born from this.

August 12, 2008 - submitted by Justin, United States of America

Q. If Coldplay was a teeny-bob boy band, what would be the weirdest merchandise the band would be talked into selling?

The Oracle replies:

Once upon a time Coldplay started a side project called Pectoralz that was essentially a boy band. They joked about playing a gig with Pectoralz being first on as support to Coldplay. They didn’t take it too seriously but songs were written even though they didn’t perform. A girl making a demo for the A&R guy who signed them at EMI recorded one of their songs much later. That also didn’t materialize into anything but was called Call Me. I guess a muscle rub would have been appropriately weird.

Q. Do any members of Coldplay use a Mac at home? What about iPhones?

The Oracle replies:

Yes, the band love all Apple Mac products but they don’t all have iPhones because they’re not on the mobile network that supports them.

Q. If I tell my friends, will I be rejected?

The Oracle replies:

If you are they’re not friends to start with!
