Coldplay @ the BBC 18/06/2008 [Nettie Report with Pics/Audio/Video/Interviews]

Hey!

I’m sorry I haven’t blogged about this until this morning. I was absolutely exhausted after coming back from BBC Television Centre, where I was again able to get into the Coldplay gig, not having won a competition [because I failed to enter].

I got there about 4pm and was walking down the line, trying to find out if there was a spare ticket. I know there were people not able to get to the gig, for one reason of another, so I was fairly hopeful. Met up with Cody and his girlfriend and another friend and there just happened to be a man behind them who had a spare ticket. WHEE!!!! So, Adrian, if you’re out there- YOU RAWK!It wouldn’t have mattered if I didn’t have a ticket, because you were able to see the gig, by standing near the main gate and looking in, which we were doing, while the band was doing their soundcheck. Chris was great. He was saving his voice by singing in octave down and not singing in places, but just getting the music right for the gig. I had been worried about him. Having played four gigs in four days isn’t easy. He’s a wise man. I also liked how he became quite assertive when things needed to get sorted. He comes over as very fair and cooperative, but obviously, when he needs to step in and take charge, he does so with grace.

Guy was taking pictures on an antique looking camera. He took one of what looked like a ‘Coldplay meeting’ on stage. There was the band together with all their helpers and they were standing in circle discussing whatever. I could see Miller and Hoppy and they also have a new roadie, who has dreadlocks [they look better than mine! LOL!]. The band then moved over to a mini stage, where they soundchecked ‘Yellow’. I thought to myself ‘I know where I’m standing tonite!’.

The crowd that had gathered at the gates were clapping after every song, even though they weren’t the full version. Chris acknowedged everyone, and thanked them for looking. We ran back to get out places in the queue as it was approaching 5pm [opening time].

At the front of the queue were four boys, who I’ve dubbed the ‘VIVA Boys’, as they were all wearing white ties, that when they stood in a row spelled ‘VIVA’. I thought that was a stroke of genius.

So we were let in, having had to pass through metal detectors [geez, dont' you trust us BBC? I'm kidding!] and everyone vyed for their place at the front of the stage. I firstly decided to stand in the middle and was about 3 rows back, but there were two giant people in front of me so I had to move. I went over the right, which wasn’t being filled up and got 3rd row.

We had to wait ages because things didn’t kick off until just before 7pm and when they did everyone was on board with the screaming and handclapping for the teevee cameras. I didn’t realise that Applausestore were involved. I recognised a couple of their guys and there were people in a secondary queue coming in after us who had applausestore passes.

Met some nice peeps in the crowd, including a couple from Wales, who had really cute accents and two guys who won tickets and flew in from the Netherlands [hiya Paul and Reis!]

The band hit the stage to Life in Technicolor and went through a blinding set. If you haven’t seen it on TV, then get your hands on a copy asap! Clocks was a little rusty. Will lost his beat, but regained it quickly and even Guy went off the rails a bit [bless]. Chris messed up the start of 42, but I couldn’t see it. He apologised [stop doing that! LOL!!!]. That song was again amazing as was Lost! which is fast becoming my favourite song on the album, hands down.

When Chris said they have faces for radio, you can hear me scream ‘NO!’. Any shouting - I’m the one starting it and everyone else just followed :-D.

The band went over to the small stage and because we knew this, we hauled ass over there to be near the front. That more than made up for me not being able to see this properly at the Brixton show. They looked so cute huddled together. Will was playing a huge silver guitar and Guy was playing a tiny guitar. It’s nice to see the rhythm section being guitar heroes. Jonny was playing some shakers and a tamborine. They sung Yellow and Chris acknowledged the builders over the road, as well as the helicopter in the sky earlier. He sung about them not filming his bald patch LOL!. He also dedicated a song to ‘uncle’, who in fact is Jay-Z [apparently that's what Apple calls him :-D].

During ‘Fix You’ Chris sung “Lights will guide you home. And ignite your phone.” LOL!
