You know how I know Coldplay isn’t gay?

I’ve been listening to the new Coldplay album, Viva La Vida, since it was released June 17th. I’ve never been an avid fan of the band, although I am familiar with most if not all of their hits from the last couple of years. I even saw part of their live DVD a while back and remember being impressed with how hard they rocked live.

The thing was, nobody (myself included) ever wanted to admit they liked Coldplay. We have Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd to thank for that one. No one wanted to own up to liking Coldplay for fear of being called gay due to their hilarious improved “You know how I know you’re gay?” scene in 40 Year Old Virgin. [Read more]

Did Coldplay copy Joe Satriani? [Video]

Poor Chris Martin. He’s been sitting pretty at the top of album and singles charts the world over in recent weeks, and yet he’s still suffering accusations from inventive YouTubers suggesting his best-selling songs are rip-offs.

First came a fine piece of self-publicity by Brooklyn indie band Creaky Boards, who suggested Martin had come to see them and copied their song The Songs I Didn’t Write for Coldplay’s Number 1 single Viva La Vida.

No one quite believed Creaky Boards, as it soon emerged that Coldplay had demo’d Viva La Vida by the time Martin went to the Creaky Boards gig.

But now things get stranger. Now some wag is suggesting Coldplay’s real source of inspiration might be shaven-headed rock guitar instrumentalist Joe Satriani, and that Viva La Vida copies Satriani track If I Could Fly. At least this track was released in 2004, way before Martin and co would have written Viva La Vida. But does anyone really believe Chris Martin even listens to Joe Satriani? Or maybe it’s Creaky Boards who are the closet Satriani fans, and they’re the culprits?

There’s a mashup of Coldplay and Satriani doing the rounds already, and while it seems preposterous the two are related by anything other than coincidence – neither tune is the most melodically unusual, after all - songs have ended up in lawyers’ hands for less.
After all, where there’s a hit there’s a writ…

Coldplay Maintain Hold On UK Album Charts

Coldplay have held onto the number one spot on the UK album charts with ‘Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends’.

The band’s fourth album, already one of the fastest selling in chart history, is spending its second week at the chart summit. Elsewhere on the album countdown, Duffy and Neil Diamond stayed at number two and three respectively with ‘Rockferry’ and ‘Home After Dark’.

Coldplay Being Considered For Headline Slot At Glastonbury 2009

Rapper Jay-Z triumphs in headline spot, but Eavis says risk too great to repeat

Glastonbury festival will “revisit its musical roots” next year with guitar-based bands returning to the headline slots. The move comes after the controversial decision to select the US rapper Jay-Z as the main headline act at this year’s event. Organisers are now considering Coldplay and Radiohead for next summer, bands that have delivered renowned festival performances.

Chris Bra-tin

THAT bra doesn’t look like it belongs to GWYNETH PALTROW?

But CHRIS MARTIN took a good, long look – and maybe a cheeky sniff – after a fan tossed it at him from a crowd, just to make sure.

COLDPLAY were mid-song on NBC’s The Today Show in New York yesterday when Chris found the over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder clamped to his face.

And with his biblical lyrics, I bet he thought the brassiere had rained down from heaven. God Putting A Smile on his face and all that jazz.

But I don’t think I would have marvelled at it for long by the look of it. I bet the girl who lobbed it didn’t have matching undercrackers on.

And it seems to have done something odd to Chris too…

Ne-Yo tops Coldplay on UK charts

LONDON (Reuters) - American R&B artist Ne-Yo gatecrashed Coldplay’s domination of the charts, according to figures released on Sunday.

Having secured their first number one single last week with “Viva La Vida” — the title track from their new album — Coldplay slipped to two as Ne-Yo’s “Closer” moved up one place to take the top spot, the Official UK Charts Company said.

Jay-Z Triumphs at Glastonbury - Chris Martin watches online

Michael Eavis praises rapper’s headline festival appearance

Glastonbury boss Michael Eavis has claimed that he’s not worried Noel Gallagher will be offended after being dissed in Jay-Z’s intro tape.

However, the organiser warned that last night’s (June 28) hip-hop set could be a one-off, as there is only one Jay-Z.

Might as well warm to Coldplay [More Online VLV Reviews]

“Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” Coldplay (Capitol)
‘Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” might go down as the album of the year, despite all its shortcomings, unoriginality and pretentiousness.

Tired of being considered a poor man’s U2 or Radiohead, Coldplay — singer-songwriter-pianist-guitarist (and Mr. Gwyneth Paltrow) Chris Martin, lead guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion — ups the ante by trying to come up with a cross between U2’s “The Joshua Tree” and Radiohead’s “Kid A.” Heck, they’ve even enlisted U2 producer Brian Eno, along with Markus Dravs (of Arcade Fire fame) to helm the project.

Coldplay seizes the moment

The band Coldplay poses in an alleyway outside the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” studio in Hollywood, June 2. From left, the members are Guy Berryman, Will Champion, Chris Martin, and Jonny Buckland.

Chris Martin was on the floor working out the knots. As his handlers hovered, the usually affable Coldplay singer stretched out on the carpet in a dim and airless room backstage at the Jimmy Kimmel show. It was hours before show time and the singer’s muscles were tight and his expression sour. Finally, he looked up with pleading eyes. “Can we escape? Let’s go somewhere else. Maybe some place with trees? I have a car and a driver… “
