In The City: The big success stories [Coldplay]

OK today they may bestride the music world, but countless acts took their first steps to glory at ITC. Sarah Walters does the name check:

Coldplay
THEY’RE a bunch of boys who need little introduction these days, but Coldplay were absolute beginners when they put on their first ever live show… at In The City.

The performance was secured on the back of their Safety EP and, by the band’s own admission, their appearance in 1998 was “disastrous”.

As frontman Chris Martin later recalled: “We were first on in a tiny little cafe, the lowest of the low, and we had a really arsey sound man who just wanted to go for a beer. That night I completely forgot the first part of the first song and it was downhill from then on.”

They had just six songs in their arsenal, including Don’t Panic and High Speed. Still, the potential of Chris and his cohorts Jon Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion caught the ear of A&R scout Deborah Wild and she took up Coldplay’s cause.

Within months, the band signed to Simon Williams’ Fierce Panda for a one-off single that ultimately led to a deal with Parlophone.

The aftermath? World domination.

Gwyneth Paltrow helps out a sibling’s first movie

Gwyneth Paltrow says she actually had to try and convince her brother Jake to cast her in his film “The Good Night,” opening Friday.

“I loved how wry and unglamorous [my character] was, part of the dissolution of a relationship,” she says, “But Jake said, ‘Absolutely not.’ He didn’t like the perception that went with it.”

Which perception? How about this: Oscar-winning big sis comes to the rescue by lending star power to younger sib’s feature film writing-directing debut?

SONG OF THE WEEK: COLDPLAY’S MURDER

Here’s another psychedelic video, this time featuring Coldplay’s ‘Murder’. Immerse yourself….

Murder, they’re coming to get us
They’re coming to get us
And the way we hide

Murder, see it all around us
See it all around us
And the way we hide

Murder, they’re coming to get us
They’re coming to get us
And the way we hide

Tie me to a tree
Tie my hands above my head
Sing a song to me
Sing a song like what you said

They’re gonna murder me
They’re gonna take me down
And even before I sleep
I cry murder

Come and spit at us
Come and throw your weight around
Come and fight with us
Try and knock us to the ground

They’re gonna murder me
They’re gonna take me down
And even before I sleep
I scream murder
Murder

Oh yeah what can it possibly gain?
Oh what can it possibly gain?
Oh now what can it possibly gain?
Oh yeah what could it possibly gain?

I cry murder
Murder
I cry murder

Murder, all coming to get us
All coming to get us
And the way we hide

Murder, see it all around us
See it all around us
And the way we hide

Murder, they’re coming to get us
They’re coming to get us
And the way we hide

Murder, see it all around you
See it all around you
And the way we hide

‘Green’ Kanye West Re-cycles again [Ft Chris Martin]

Kanye West ft. John Legend - “Coming Home”

Kanye West ft. Chris Martin - “Homecoming”

Kanye occasionally falls under a category I like to call “green rappers.” Not because his money is longer than a stretch of Texas highway, but because he recycles more rhymes than the average rapper. Anyone remember the “Hater n***as marry hater b*tches and have hater kids…” rhyme from a mixtape freestyle that found its way onto “Bring Me Down”? Or the “people talk so much sh*t about me at the barbershop that they forget to get their hair cut…” line from “Is That Your Car” that wound up on “Everything I Am.”?

Similarly, “Home Coming” (with John Legend) appeared on a pre-College Dropout mixtape back in 2003. The same song, now starring Coldplay’s Chris Martin and a new beat, resurfaced on this year’s Graduation.

Ye figured that not too many people knew about the original song. Plus, he already told Jay he did a song with Coldplay.

Compare both tracks and let me know which version you prefer.

Ikea’s Chris Martin Revealed!

If you have ever visited an Ikea or perused their catalog, you too may have noticed that many designs have been created by a man named “Chris Martin.” I have often wondered what this “Chris Martin” looked like, if he bared any resemblance to the Chris Martin married to Gwyneth Paltrow and lead singer of Coldplay.

Well my prayers have finally been answered with the 2008 Ikea catalog. Behold, it’s Chris Martin of Ikea fame, designer of the Ellan chair:

Both Chris Martins seem to have closely cropped, light colored hair, but Coldplay’s Chris is probably a bit taller and thinner than Ikea Chris.

A peek inside Gwyneth Paltrow’s & Chris Martin’s Amagansett home

The first thing actress Gwyneth Paltrow bought for her shingle-style Amagansett house was a $37,500 Boontje Blossum chandelier, but her “major splurge” was on a yoga and pilates studio that she uses every day.

That’s according to the latest issue of Us Weekly, in a sneak peek of a spread in the Oct. 9 issue of House & Garden magazine.

Paltrow and husband, Coldplay rocker Chris Martin, bought the unfinished home for $5.4 million in 2006. First, they added bedrooms to accommodate their “big families,” which includes children Apple, 3, and Moses, 18 months, mother, actress Blythe Danner, and brother, director Jake Paltrow.

Coldplay Timeline: First Headline Tour January 2000

We started this tour in Cambridge. Playing in what felt like massive venues, on our own was an amazing feeling. Some of the places we’d played on the NME tour, some of the venues were the ‘bigger brother’ of ones we’d played in the past [Wolverhampton: LIttle Civic W Hall.] Amazing!

Medium to the stars like Coldplay returns to Civic Hall

ONE of the UK’s top mediums will be returning to Whitehaven Civic Hall on October 7.

Sharon Neill, pictured right, is visiting venues across the country to relay messages from people who have passed over.

Said to be a hit with audiences because of her entertaining, relaxed and down to earth style, Sharon will also be passing on messages from friends and relatives of people in the audience who have died and want to communicate with those they have left behind.

Sharon, who is blind as a result of being given pure oxygen when she was in the incubator, first realised that she had a psychic gift when she was a child living in Northern Ireland.

She would be able to describe in details things that she could never possibly have seen. With encouragement, Sharon eventually overcame her doubts and learned to use her gift.

Her ability to relay messages to people whose loved ones have died is said to have convinced even the most entrenched sceptics of her talents as a medium.

Sharon has done readings for several celebrities including indie bands Coldplay, Ash, Van Morrison, and actor James Nesbitt.
