Songwriters, including Chris Martin, reveal top 10 tracks

The Beatles’ Strawberry Fields and Jeff Buckley’s cover of the Leonard Cohen classic Hallelujah feature in a poll to find the 10 greatest tracks.

Fifty songwriters, including Coldplay’s Chris Martin and John Legend, took part in the vote for Q Magazine.

“Hallelujah is as near perfect as you can get. It transcends your mood. I can listen to it anywhere,” said Legend.

The songwriters were asked to name their top three and from there the list was whittled down to the final top 10.

“You can play Strawberry Fields Forever on an acoustic guitar and it sounds beautiful,” said Serge Pizzorno, of Kasabian.

“But the Beatles took the song to its furthest point, and the results are mind-bending.”

Other classic tracks on the list include David Bowie’s Life on Mars, The Rolling Stones’ Sympathy For The Devil and Bruce Springsteen’s Born To Run.

“It makes me feel like I’m being dragged away by this euphoric moment that could any moment tip into being corny, but doesn’t,” said Manic Street Preachers’ star James Dean Bradfield of the Springsteen hit.

Coldplay singer Martin picked The Verve’s Bitter Sweet Symphony.

“Bitter Sweet Symphony is as perfect a song as there is. And I say that as somebody who believes perfection is the enemy of imperfection,” said Martin.

Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ In The Wind, Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit, God Only Knows by The Beach Boys and Lou Reed classic Perfect Day complete the list.

YouTube to pay flat fee for music

LONDON - Google-owned YouTube will now pay for music tracks that are used on its website, as part of an agreement with MCPS-PRS Alliance, the UK group that collects royalties for more than 50,000 composers, songwriters and publishers.

The group signed a deal with YouTube to license 10m pieces of music, from artists such as Amy Winehouse and Coldplay, to the video-sharing site, in return for a flat fee, which has not been disclosed, but is estimated to be tens of millions of pounds. The agreement means YouTube will pay a blanket fee for music to be used in its partners’ professional sites and in amateurs’ videos, which is similar to the system that many radio and television broadcasters use.

Paltrow to film US cooking show

Gwyneth Paltrow is to film her own cooking show for US TV.

The Oscar-winning actress - who sticks to a macrobiotic diet - will travel around Spain sampling the local delicacies with chef Mario Batali.

She will kick off the two-month tour in October, leaving behind her husband Chris Martin and children Apple and Moses.

Channel 4 and ITV are bidding for the rights to show the programme, which is being made by the American channel PBS.

The 34-year-old spent many childhood holidays in Spain and claims she adores the food, saying: “I eat all that [Spanish] stuff. The crazy fish things, the eels, I love it all.”

A source told the Daily Mail: “This is so far removed from what Gwyneth is used to that the show is sure to be a ratings winner. It can’t fail. Even if it’s proper car-crash TV it will be entertaining at least.”

Coldplay’s teetoal, cricketing antics

“SPLITTING up is a strange term, I don’t like it,” said Zabrinski frontman Matthew Durbridge.

“No-one has argued, we are all still best mates.

“We’ve just stopped being Zabrinski is all.”

Regardless of what terminology gets used, Zabrinski are no more.

The psychedelic Carmarthen collective will play their last ever gig on home turf at Gwyl Macs Festival on Sunday night before heading their separate ways on various new projects.

The highlights? “Going on tour with Super Furry Animals was pretty special because when we were kids we really loved them.

“But playing with Coldplay was pretty funny because we couldn’t have met a more opposite band to us.

“It was at a Radio One gig in Cardiff University in 2000 and they didn’t drink, so we stole their rider while they played cricket indoors with balls of paper.

“We were quite bemused by the whole Coldplay factor.”

While Chris Martin and Co. are still going strong, Zabrinski are disbanding having realised they lacked enthusiasm for a fifth album when they reconvened in July – but they are not sad about it.

“People keep looking at me like I’m about to cry but I’m happy about it, it’s the proverbial weight off,” said Durbridge, 26.

Nettie’s Reading Festival 2007 Report

I was at this year’s Reading Festival only for the Sat/Sun, but I had a wicked time nonetheless. It’s not the best festival I’ve attended this year and I dunno whether I’ll ever go again. It will have to be something pretty exceptional for me to make that kind of effort [i.e. if Coldplay were playing or something].

There were things that I hated like, where I was camping and the fact that you had to cross the river Thames to get to the main campsite/Arena. It kind of put me off. I got lost as the map inside the program wasn’t clear at all. I thought I was camping in the Orange zone, when it turned out I was in white. Fucking aggravating, I’m telling you.

People are more rowdy [mainly the younger ones]. It’s a ‘young festival’, so I’ve been told and some of them were carring on quite badly. Shoving each other to get in and out of the fields/marquees and not caring if someone was hurt or not. That kind of behaviour I find intollerable.

It really came to a head when I was watching Bloc Party. I was getting squeezed something cronic against the barrier and had to be lifted out on the last song, as I couldn’t take it anymore. I had wanted to stay at the front to see Arcade Fire, but had to enjoy it from a long, safe distance [they were fab]. I didn’t bother to stay for the Chilli Peppers as I’ve seen them at Live Earth and they’re not really my Tetley - know what I mean…

Coldplay continue on their trajectory

Selling over 35 million records worldwide, London rock outfit Coldplay continue to operate in the upper echelon of the music industry.

Band Members Chris Martin (Vocals, Keyboard), Jonny Buckland (Guitar), Guy Berryman (Bass) and Will Champion (Drums) met back in 1996 at University and formed the band a year later. Starting life as a boy band called Pectoralz, once united changed musical direction and slowly evolved into 4 Piece act that would garner them mountains of attention.

After a tumultuous beginning and on again, off again relationships between the band, as they began to breakthrough they also had to reestablish their goals.

Heavily influenced by the stylings of Jeff Buckley and Radiohead, their massively successful debut Album Parachute announced there meteoric arrival. After the luke warm response to their first single “Shiver”, they finally had their first hit with the overplayed ever since tune “Yellow”.

Touring relentlessly since 1999 as their fan bas grew so did their grueling schedule. Eventually making a dent in the US market after several high profile appearances and winning a Grammy in 2002.

In 2001 the band returned to the studio for their second album A Rush of Blood to the Head which was released the following year. Hit singles on the record included “In My Place”, “Scientist” and “Clocks”,it was during this time that the band became rock superstars.

Modelling their live show on the U2/Pink Flyod style sensory experience with abundant, light, lasers and multimedia the band toured relentlessly. Mega stardom has its price and in 2004 the band withdrew from the maelstrom.

Entering the studio to make XY, taking a much needed break to reassess and recharge their energies. (Hits off the album included “Speed of Sound”

Continuing their upward trajectory the band have continued to tour and are now working on their 4th Album which is produced by Brian Eno. Scheduled for release later in 2007, for up to date info on the albums progression visit www.myspace.com/coldplay
