Google, EMI Sign Music Deal For YouTube

May 31 - Google and the EMI Music record label have cut a deal that will let YouTube users access videos and music by E-M-I artists including Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra and Pink Floyd.

While financial terms of the deal were not released, EMI says “EMI Music and its artists will be fairly compensated for their work.”

Under the agreement, EMI will work with YouTube and Google to come up with business models through which YouTube users can view user-created content that features EMI-owned and copyrighted media.

The label can also ask that EMI-copyrighted media be removed from YouTube, if it wants.

Kanye’s “Graduation” Date, Earlier Than Expected

Though originally set for a September release, Def Jam has confirmed that Kanye West is now slated to walk the stage with his new album, Graduation, in late August.

According to Billboard, the news came via the Louis Vuitton Don’s latest mixtape, which recently made its way to the internet and boasts 25 tracks, including “In The Mood,” featuring Brooklyn rhyme-spitter Talib Kweli as well as “Us Placers,” which features guest verses from Pharrell and fellow Windy City MC Lupe Fiasco.

In addition to leaking snippets from the album’s track listing, Ye recently released a Hype Williams-directed clip for the album’s lead single, “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” which is co-produced by DJ Toomp. The video, which premiered this past Friday on the rapper’s website, features only Kanye in a stripped-down, deserted environment with no celebrity cameos or video models.

The album will also feature guest appearances from Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Jon Brion, 88 Keys and poet Malik Yusef.

Robert Downey, Jr.: I’ll leave the singing to Chris Martin

Footage: Interviews from ‘Iron Man’ Set

With an Oscar-winning actress and three Oscar-nominated actors, Iron Man won’t be just another comic book movie; it has the opportunity to be one of the best.

Entertainment Tonight has scored one of the first looks at the movie, including some behind-the-scenes footage of Downey goofing around on the set with a motor bike and Howard firing a M2. 50 caliber machine gun from atop an army Hummer. There’s no new Paltrow material for you to feast your eyes on, but while being interviewed by ET, Downey does discuss a kissing scene he filmed with the actress.. When asked if he should have serenaded Paltrow to get her in the mood, Downey states that there’s no way he could compete with Paltrow’s husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin.

Litestructures Studios Celebrates Second Anniversary with Record Occupancy Levels thanks to Coldplay

Litestructures Studios today celebrates its second anniversary with the announcement that the Studio has surpassed occupancy targets with a steady string of concert tours making use of the facility.

Two years ago today Litestructures Studios opened its doors for the first time to host production rehearsals for Coldplay’s Twisted Logic tour. In doing so it set a new standard for rehearsal studios – a £2.5m, purpose-built facility large enough to accommodate arena and stadium sized live music productions. Since then the Studio has hosted rehearsals for Cirque de Soleil, Franz Ferdinand, Prodigy, Scissor Sisters, Pussycat Dolls, Muse, George Michael, Basement Jaxx, Robbie Williams, Kaiser Chiefs, Massive Attack, Beautiful South, Westlife, Journey, Australian Pink Floyd Show, Faithless, Meat Loaf and many others.

Apple Launches DRM-Free iTunes Plus

Apple today launched iTunes Plus, a new addition to its existing iTunes service which offers AAC music tracks from major label EMI at 256 Kbps encoding (twice the rate of standard iTunes purchases) at $1.29 per track—and without Apple’s FairPlay digital rights management (DRM) technology. That means users can play iTunes Plus tracks on any music player (or using any application) which supports AAC encoding, rather than the tracks being restricted to playback using iTunes or Apple iPods.

“This is a tremendous milestone for digital music,” said Eric Nicoli, CEO of EMI Group. “Consumers are going to love listening to higher quality iTunes Plus tracks from their favorite EMI artists with no usage restrictions.”

iTunes Plus is available via a new version 7.2 of Apple’s iTunes application for Mac OS X and Windows, available as a free download from Apple. Right now, iTunes Plus features only tracks from EMI (including popular artists like Coldplay, Joss Stone, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and many more), although plainly Apple expects other music distributes to get on board with offering DRM-free downloads via iTunes:

Gwyneth’s holding onto her past

Gwyneth Paltrow is renting her childhood home from its new owner.

The Oscar-winning actress was devastated when her mother, Blythe Danner, sold the Santa Monica house where she had lived until she was 11 for over $8.6-million (about R60-million).

A source told Us Weekly magazine: “Gwyneth couldn’t talk about it. She was very upset.”

The 34-year-old is currently living in the four-bedroom house while she films her new movie Iron Man in the US.

The source added: “They just had her daughter Apple’s third birthday party there.”

Gwyneth mainly resides in the UK with her Coldplay star husband Chris Martin and their two children, daughter Apple and 13-month-old son Moses.

Apple spent the day with grandmother Blythe while Gwyneth worked on Tuesday. The pair enjoyed a trip to the beach and a round of crazy golf. - Bang Showbiz

Tonight

Grace talk Coldplay love notes…..

BEN: It was amazing. It’s such an honour to work with people like that. It’s taken us quite a while to get where we are, in various guises this band has been going for eight years, and just for all of us to listen to different records and say ‘I like such and such a producer’ and listen to something else and say ‘there’s something about the sonics on this, it’s been mixed perfectly,’ and then to actually get to work with these people. We were sitting in this mix studio in New York, our label flew us out there for two weeks, we were like, ‘what the f*** is going on here… we’re getting all expenses paid trip to New York, basically a holiday, and sitting in this amazing studio with notes on the cupboard, like ‘To Michael, thanks for all the darts, love Coldplay.’ He sits there and actually plays the mixing desk like an instrument. He’s really intense, moving these different knobs, he’s obviously totally in love with what he does, but also he’d really get into the tracks and we’d get pissed every night because we were so happy with what he was doing and he was loving it. It was brilliant, so much fun.

Elbow’s Guy Garvey doesn’t wish to be Coldplay

The band, while not a household name in the United States, sells albums moderately well and has toured to appreciative crowds. “People ask, ‘Do you wish you were Coldplay?’ and the answer is, ‘No, not really,’” Garvey reveals. “As much as I respect them for what they do and the level of fame they achieved in such a short time, my head would have exploded. I’m really much happier sort of making my discreet music that fits somewhere special for people; that’s the idea, anyway.

“We seem to have a special place, and that’s just the most flattering thing in the world.”
