Although the official line is that Devon-born Martin needs the property as an extra studio while he fine-tunes Coldplay’s fourth album, there are whispers that Miss Paltrow’s gently expanding tummy is the real reason behind the acquisition.

Admirers of the American actress note that that just a year after her son Moses was born, and three years after the birth of daughter Apple, the blonde glamourpuss is looking especially curvaceous. She has also ditched her stringent macrobiotic diet and is forgoing her usual daily regime of yoga and Pilates.

One friend comments: “As their house has only four bedrooms, if they want to have any more children they’ll need the extra room.”

The two purchased their London pad from Kate Winslet three years ago when Gwynnie was first pregnant with Apple. Since then they have expanded their property portfolio by buying two flats in a neighbouring block to house the nanny and a housekeeper. And now they have added, for £3.1million, the next door house.

So there’s plenty of room for that new nursery…
