Kasabian @ Royal Albert Hall [Teenage Cancer Trust] 30/03/2007

I bagged some great tickets to see Kasabian at their Teenage Cancer Trust gig last nite. We were in the arena section, 5 rows back. Their support were The Lea Shores [who I found a bit boring to be honest] and The Bees [who rocked the house]. The Bees are such a talented bunch of lads. They’d swap intruments between every song like nobody’s business. There were trumpets, keyboards a baritone saxophone. There’s no end to what they can do. I particularly enjoyed their last few songs.

When Kasabian came on stage, the seated crowd shot up [as you do]. It would have been weird to be sitting during a Kasabian gig. They had some western music [maybe by Morricone?] as they came on stage like the rockin’ gunslingers they are. The guys were in fine form and I was able to video some of the songs, until an over zealous usher asked me to stop [the killjoys]. What I really gripe about is the show is filmed [for the purposes of the giant video screen behind the band]. Why don’t they release the gigs on DVD. That way, more money can be raised for the Teenage Cancer Trust. I was told they don’t do that, which I find to be a bit lame.

The band put on an amazing show, as usual [this is my 3rd Kasabian gig]. I like how Serge and Tom share vocal duties almost equally now. And they played ID, which they haven’t played in a while. I love that song. I also love Me Plus One and of course Empire. They always end their show with LSF, which sends the crowd home chanting ‘Laaaa la laaaa lala la lala la la’.

Pix are here. Vids I will upload when I’ve got time.

Coldplay has pride of place on Ricky Gervais’ iPod

RICKY’S LONDON

Favourite London restaurant: The Ivy, because it panders to my proletarian tastes. Well, proletarian with money to spend. I’m quite squeamish with food - I can basically eat chicken and mince - and I like their shepherd’s pie. I have been known to go to posh restaurants and have fish and chips on the way back.

I love to walk: from Teddington to Richmond. Really lovely. Feels a bit like you could be in the country.
The last film I saw: Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. It went straight into my top 10. When it started, I got a little tingle and thought, I’m going to love the next two hours - and I did.

What’s on my iPod: Dylan, Neil Young, David Bowie, Cat Stevens, some folk, U2, Radiohead, Coldplay - all the big boys. And The Killers, who are my new favourite band.
Favourite London building: The University of London Senate House in Bloomsbury. I love that 1930s architecture. So strong and austere. I’ve never got bored of that building and I walk by it every day.

Tory David Martin is Chris’ uncle!

David Martin, who was the Tory MP for Portsmouth South between 1987 and 1997, has been beaten by the Liberals in three different constituencies.

He was the unsuccesful Tory candidate against Paddy Ashdown in Yeovil in 1983, lost his seat to Mike Hancock in 1997 and was beaten by Stephen Williams in Bristol West in 2005. He also lost to Labour in Rugby & Kenilworth in 2001.

It may be of some consolation to him that he is the uncle of Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

The Least Wussy Moment In Coldplay History - Martin Tells Paps to “Fuck off!”

For someone with a reputation for penning such easy-going songs, Coldplay’s Chris Martin certainly has a sharp tongue! Much to the British balladeer’s frustration, we spotted Martin leaving with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow after a nice lunch at Ivy On The Shore, with the couple getting in their car separately to prevent the paps from catching them together. As you’ll see in the video, Chris certainly wasn’t too happy to see us - sorry Chris, we never meant to cause you trouble!

Series two sells for £21.99 – with a box set of both series also released today for £27.99.
