Prime Seats For Big Concerts Being Auctioned By Ticketmaster

Coldplay put tickets to shows in Vancouver and Toronto earlier this year up for online auction through Ticketmaster as an attempt to cut out scalpers, and the British superstars also donated a portion of the premium proceeds to charity.

Now a number of other big names have jumped on the ticket auction bandwagon in conjunction with Ticketmaster, but no charities will be benefiting through ticket sales for upcoming shows by Madonna, Roger Waters or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Any mark-up on the face value of their tickets that arise through bidding will be split between the artists and Ticketmaster.

Madonna lives to tell — exactly what, we don’t know

Sure, that’s important information to share. But it loses some of its impact when it’s sandwiched between frivolous dance numbers delivered by a woman who is charging a lot of dough to see her shows. Unlike Bono of U2 or Chris Martin of Coldplay, Madonna has a hard time convincingly mixing messages and music. Each time she tried, the effort seemed truly forced.

Madonna came down from the cross, but continued to preach in one form or another as she delivered simple messages — war is bad, saving the environment is good, etc. — in songs such as “Sorry.”

Katie’s Good-Bye For ‘Today’

Video montages and tears mark Couric’s morning show exit.

For Koppel, it was a vintage show-don’t-tell approach to TV journalism, moving and subtle and maybe a bit haughty in its steadfast refusal to take us back through the years. But on a morning show you can emote until your smile hurts and the Coldplay sound bites have been exhausted and there, finally, is Gene Shalit, in his bow tie, a sight for sore eyes.

COLDPLAY VS. U2

Members of Coldplay have made no secret of their ambitions to become U2, the self-proclaimed world’s biggest band. ” With both in town over the weekend, Tribune Music Critic Greg Kot compares the challenger with the champ.

CHARISMA

Singer Chris Martin is the quiet, shy type but it works for Gwyneth, so who are we to criticize?

Bono: Even a pope might be hard-pressed to rival Bono when it comes to world-wide fame.

CREATIVITY

Forthcoming album “X&Y” sounds like Coldplay’s answer to U2’s “Joshua Tree.”

“How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” sounds like U2 trying to revisit past glories.

Breaking NewGrounds: UK Edition

After several successful years of native British bands like Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand dominating the charts and raking in awards, the United Kingdom continues to storm the world by ushering in a new wave of mthe hottest rock acts.

Starfield, `Beauty in the Broken’

This CD has drawn some criticism for sounding too much like other bands, including Switchfoot, Coldplay, Radiohead and Tim Hughes. If so, at least Starfield is learning from the best and is bound to keep developing its own unique sound.

Imitative or not, “Beauty in the Broken” is high-quality music with a relevant message.
