CHICAGO 30/03/2006 REVIEWS/SETLIST/PIX

Great pix by tinkertart can be found here.

And thanks Whitebrowgigs for this review.

Coldplay seemed really happy to be there, with chris saying, “We’re very proud to be playing here in Chicago” which actually caused him to mess up the first two lines of the concert. He later told us that if we felt we had been ripped off due to his shady act, he said to send letters to Guy at his home in London and he’d reply to every letter. He also said that they were happy to be in chicago and how he loved how chicago folks enjoy good tunes.

setlist:
1. Square one
2. Politik
3. Yellow
4. Speed of Sound
5. God Put a smile upon your face
(chris changed the end of the first verse to: “Some places we play are pretty shitty; now we’re doing two sold out shows in the Windy City” and then kicked into the chorus)
6. What if?
7. Don’t panic (jon sang second verse)
8. White Shadows
9. the Scientist
10. till Kingdom Come (acoustic)
11. Ring of Fire (Acoustic) Cash cover (duh)
12. Trouble (acoustic) (I think Jon’s guitar did something funky and Chris got giggling about it and they started the second verse over)
13. Clocks
14. Talk
Encore
15. Swallowed in the Sea
16. In my place
17. Fix You

Overall, GREAT SHOW. Crowd sucked at times though, at least where i was at. Some folks didn’t know any tunes and these obnoxious girls in front of us only got excited when they showed chris on the big screen.

Chris being Chris

World’s biggest album for Coldplay

Coldplay’s growing domination of the global music market was confirmed today after the announcement that their latest album, X&Y, was the bestseller in 2005.

The British band, fronted by Chris Martin, have recently made a major breakthrough in the US, and already claimed the biggest selling digital album of the year award across the Atlantic.

They have also led a British revival in America, with artists such as former army officer James Blunt following in their footsteps.

When X&Y was released last June it became the first album to simultaneously top both the British and US album charts since the Beatles did in 2000 with their collection of greatest hits, One.

In total, Coldplay sold more than eight million copies of their third album in 2005, beating Mariah Carey’s album The Emancipation of Mimi into second place.

Commenting on Coldplay’s success, Alain Levy, the chairman and chief executive of their record label, EMI, said: ‘This is a huge achievement for Coldplay.

‘They have developed long-term global success over the course of a number of albums, and I’m sure that they will continue to build their career for many years to come.’

There was further good news for British acts as both Blunt and Robbie Williams also featured in the International Federation of Phonographic Industries’ (IFPI) top ten selling albums.

Blunt had the ninth biggest hit, with his debut album Back to Bedlam, while former Take That singer Williams was in tenth with Intensive Care.

US rapper 50 Cent was third with The Massacre, the Black Eyed Peas were fourth with Monkey Business and Green Day’s American Idiot came in fifth.

Coldplay top 2005’s global charts

Coldplay had the world’s best-selling album of 2005, beating Mariah Carey and 50 Cent, according to official figures.

The British band’s album X&Y sold 8.3 million copies around the world, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) reports.

It beat Mariah Carey’s The Emancipation of Mimi, which sold 7.7 million, and 50 Cent’s The Massacre, with 7.5 million.

The figures also showed digital music sales tripled last year but overall global music sales were down 3%.

Coldplay leaves fans ecstatic

British band rocks a sold-out Meadowlands crowd

A sold-out crowd flocked to the Continental Airlines Arena Saturday in eager anticipation of a rock concert given by one of the most popular British musical groups of this era — Coldplay.

Known for its smooth melodies, poetic lyrics and cathartic feel, this group of four British boys has established an enormous fan base in America, owing in large part to the success of its three most well-known albums: “Parachutes”(2000), “A Rush of Blood to the Head” (2002) and, most recently, “X&Y” (2005).

The formidable masses at the concert consisted of tens of thousands of revelers ranging in age from 13 to 40 and assembling from all around the tri-state area. They came to East Rutherford with high hopes for a fun, engaging musical experience from a talented group of musicians.

The spectacular performance that Coldplay delivered surely satisfied, and then surpassed, all expectations.

“The energy of the crowd was really good. There was a ton of singing and dancing in the crowd,” said Julie Crandell, a junior at Oak Knoll School who had prime seating at this event.

“Everyone would go nuts when (Chris Martin, the lead singer) would walk over. One time, when he ran on the floor to get to the piano, he ran right by my section, and the crowd went crazy,” Crandell said. “I’d say they were one of the best bands I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a lot of concerts ranging from U2 to CSNY to Backstreet Boys to OAR. But Coldplay was definitely the best.”

Such liveliness and fanfare were an integral part of the concert’s atmosphere, which escalated exponentially as the night progressed.

Seen On Scene

Coldplay band members Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Will Champion and Jonny Buckland were expected to host a private party at hot nightspot Reserve — following their Chicago concert at the United Center Thursday night.

The Coldplay guys were taking a page from Korn frontman Jonathan Davis — who partied at Reserve on Wednesday night before an Allstate Arena show.

Junos brew up controversy

This year’s Juno Awards have attracted some big names in the entertainment industry, such as Chad Kroeger of Nickelback and Great Big Sea, above, Pamela Anderson and Chris Martin of Coldplay, below

OK, nobody would dare say, “And the Juno Award for complaint of the year goes to …” during Sunday night’s telecast of the 35th annual celebration of Canada’s top music talent (CTV, 7 p.m.).

Besides, that would do a grave disservice to the work this year’s host city Halifax has put in to luring the Junos their way.

Historically, though, whenever the Junos get handed out, inevitably someone or some group has a beef. In 1978, Stompin’ Tom Connors protested Junos given to expat Canucks. And hip hop outfit Rascalz refused an award for not having it presented during the televised portion of the 1998 ceremonies, alleging racism.

“It’s totally a tradition at this point,” Aaron Brophy, editor of Canadian music magazine Chart, sighs at the barrage of Juno naysayers. “I don’t think the Junos are that out of touch with reality. Are they the best, most exciting, most ground-breaking or most innovative? Absolutely not. But they do represent a lot of the big-name performers representative of what the average Canadian music fan is interested in.”

This year’s complaint arises from how many Canadian indie acts are garnering worldwide fan and critical acclaim, yet virtually ignored for top honours by the Junos. Said complainers feel that of the likes of the Arcade Fire, Hot Hot Heat, Kathleen Edwards, Bedouin Soundclash, The New Pornographers and Metric deserve as high a billing as nomination leaders Michael Buble, Nickelback, Canadian Idol winner Kalan Porter and Diana Krall (and her Christmas Songs album).

“I was one of those independent small bands for 12 years and I probably felt a little peeved sometimes that I was never even looked at,” Buble says. “I do completely understand … but I don’t know what you can really do to change things.”
Adds Great Big Sea’s Bob Hallett, “Why people like us and Michael Buble thrive in this marketplace is because we’re actually making music that people want.”

Even attracting Coldplay and Black Eyed Peas plus Pamela Anderson as Juno host has ruffled feathers over how said acts are merely there to attract TV ratings.

Brophy disagrees: “Both acts have done extensive stuff in Canada,” he says. “So what does that say about the depth and caché of our awards show that two of the biggest artists on Earth want to come to our event?”

Welcome to the jungle

The Monkeys have even been hailed as master strategists whose Internet popularity could be a blueprint for bands that want to sidestep the formal record business machinery. All these subplots have made the Monkeys the most written-about British rock group since the emergence of Coldplay.

Train disappoints at L.A. stop

Two-fifths of the onstage lineup has changed since that tour. New keyboard player Brandon Bush has a more prominent role in the sound, using the organ for a wah-wah pedal effect in “It‘s About You” and infusing both “All I Hear” and “Get Out” with a jagged, pulsing rhythm ripped from Coldplay‘s “Clocks.”
