Coldplay pours it on at Philips

In 2000, British quartet Coldplay played the Tabernacle in the interval between album No. 1, “Parachutes,” and album No. 2, “A Rush of Blood to the Head.”

It was a little dull.

The problem? Coldplay’s expansive rock is arena-sized, and it needs a space as big as the band’s soaring choruses.

Problem solved.

At Philips Arena Wednesday night, the group’s massive wall of sound washed over a packed house in a textbook display of arena-rock perfection.

Coldplay Concert “Orgasmic”

The soulless Target Center seemed an unlikely location for an experience that has been deemed “orgasmic,” “spiritually moving,” and “F-ing awesome” by Macalester students. However, last Tuesday the vast stadium filled mostly with people to whom I would normally not give the time of day (before the concert I had the pleasure of hearing a detailed list of all the girls the guys behind me wanted to “get with,” including “Josh’s girlfriend from last year”) was the site of one of the best concerts I have ever attended.

Coldplay at Nissan Pavilion

Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin once indicated that after 2002’s A Rush of Blood to the Head was released, the band might never put out another album. The brilliance that encompassed the 11-track disc put the English quartet on an international pedestal, with critics heralding the group as the next U2.

Martin has been busy since then. In December 2003, he married actress Gwyneth Paltrow. In April 2004, she gave birth to their first child, Apple Martin. With the addition of a family to his life, Martin took to writing again and began working on songs that would become this year’s Coldplay hit album, X&Y. The disc took Coldplay an eternity to create. The band recorded takes over and over again until it created an ideal disc. The highly anticipated album features tracks such as the “Clocks”-esque “Speed of Sound” and the first-heard-on-The-O.C. love anthem, “Fix You.”

Now the band — fronted by the energetic, piano-pounding and guitar-strumming Martin — is rounding out an American tour promoting X&Y, with the last show tomorrow night in Bristow, Va. After tonight, the band will head out of the country for shows in nations including Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and six shows back home in London. And to further drill home the fact that Coldplay is an international monster, every show outside the U.S. is sold out.

Coldplay warms up Beach crowd

Chris Martin, lead singer of British rock band Coldplay, sings at a packed Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater on Thursday night. The quartet is touring in support of its June release, “X & Y.”

VIRGINIA BEACH - Coldplay, arguably the biggest band in rock right now, took to the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater on Thursday night, hyping an enthusiastic crowd with their subtle, romantic songs.

“We’ve been together nine years and we finally made it to Virginia Beach,” lead singer Chris Martin said, adding that the Beach was home to a great musical scene. “I know some legends were brought up around here – Missy, the Neptunes ….”

I was just wondering why it was really necessary to show a naked black child on the front cover….

If it were a naked white child there would be uproar.

Later hours licensing arguments continue

The Dublin Castle, a music pub on Parkway, which launched the careers of Madness and Coldplay among others, won permission to open until 2am every night.

Paltrow has maternal glow

When the actress hit the road to promote her new movie “Proof” at the end of the summer, she was glowing. A friend of the Oscar-winning actress and her hubby, Coldplay rocker Chris Martin, tells Star the couple had just learned they’re expecting their second baby in the spring! “Gwyneth is 99 percent sure this baby was made in one of Chris’ dressing rooms,” claims the friend, who tells Star the new addition was likely conceived backstage at one of the music festivals that Coldplay played in England this summer. “Gwyneth is trying to contain her excitement about having another child, but she’s incredibly happy,” says the friend. Having a new baby on the way is icing on the cake for Gwyneth and Chris. “She just beams when you ask her how married life is,” a source close to Paltrow tells Star.

Teenager who defied doctors dies

“This is very much a celebration of her life and we will be playing Coldplay during the service. We will finish off with Barcelona by Queen, because she always loved that song.

“I hope it is a sunny day because that is the type of girl she was.”

Coldplay drummer glad he’s not a household name

LET’S FACE IT: Max Roach, Sheila E., ?uestlove and Ringo Starr are the exceptions. Most of the time, the drummer goes unrecognized – a pair of hands furiously moving behind tall cymbals. They’re rarely the sex symbol – the waif guitarist is – and they don’t become icons like a lead singer.

Take Coldplay . Everybody with a pulse knows who Chris Martin is – he’s the lead singer, he’s Gwyneth Paltrow’s husband, he’s baby Apple’s daddy.

Special Offer! But throw out the name “Will Champion” at a party – or Google it – and you’ll get blank stares or a page of uneven results. It’s unlikely that he’ll be mobbed in a mall any time soon, but guess what? That’s fine by him.

Pennyroyal meets Chris

Hey guys!

Today I had the opportunity to meet Chris. It was for a brief moment, but it was worth it. He was really really humble, gracious, and sweet, and I got a picture with him. He was at our radio station for an interview and we went down to the station and got to meet him. I was really surprised b/c there was only about 7 people there, including myself. But hey, I am not complaining. I’m getting my pictures developed right now, so yes I will post them when I have the chance to. I’m a little worried right now, b/c I don’t know if the guy who took the picture for me put the ‘flash’ on, but I guess I’ll have to see.

Well, I didn’t hear what he said on the radio b/c I was waiting for him outside and then inside the lobby, lol. I can tell you what he DID say to ME, however. I asked him, “Chris, can I take a picture with you?” and he goes, “What?” (or maybe more like “Wot?”) and I repeated myself and he goes “Sure, sure”. Anyway, I said “Thank you soo much” and he goes “Sure, no problem” and then after the picture was taken I thanked him again and he goes “Oh sure, no problem”. He was very sincere and humble. I can’t get over it. I met Billy Corgan in June, and Chris makes him look like Satan. Billy came off a bit pretentious.
